"Setting an example for society and to act as a catalyst for a movement towards “green” living by academic institutions through thought leadership and practical case studies."

Academic institutions worldwide are considering their operational and academic contributions to sustainability. This demands scrutiny of their own infrastructure, operations, teaching and research systems and structures and how they can facilitate operational and educational efforts in sustainable development. The drive has gained considerable impetus nationally and internationally and has stimulated an urgent need to co-ordinate the initiative in South Africa.

The Green Campus SA conference will initiate the conversation about the role of universities in education for sustainable development. It is intended to assist in demystifying the issue of sustainability in academic institutions and breaking the inertia and resistance to change that is often prevalent in current systems and structures. It will challenge campuses to become research laboratories and examples of sustainable living for the community and its students through collaborations between academia, campus operations and community stakeholders.

The conference will facilitate the discussion around “green” innovations and assess the current status and achievements of South African academic institutions for benchmarking future progress. It will also facilitate a national charter and the establishment of a network for academic institutions in order to catalyse and coordinate the South African green campus movement.
